Beginning the Custom-Build Process

Creating a home that perfectly fulfills your needs is one of the major perks of a custom-build. And while starting from scratch can be daunting, it doesn’t have to be. Here at Artisan Builders, we have an experienced team to help guide you through every step to make sure even the tiniest details of your home are perfect. Keep reading for four tips to consider when beginning the process.

Tip #1: Ask the Important Questions

Before getting into the smaller details of a custom build, it is important to get the big questions of the way first so you can plan around them. These questions can include your expected budget, how much space you want, and your preferred time frame. Also, there may be external factors to consider when deciding these, such as the end of an old lease, a child’s school year calendar, or a new baby on the way.

Tip #2: Create a Checklist

When getting into the design phase, drawing from inspiration can be challenging to create the best home layout that works for you and your needs. To make this process easier, think back on your current and older properties and create a checklist of the things you liked or things you want to improve. This can include things like the number of windows in your dining room or the layout of your kitchen. This is where you can work closely with a design-build team to solidify your dreams and see them transform into reality. Artisans specialists have over 30 years of experience who know how to help unleash your creativity while maintaining your budget.

Tip #3: Know your Style

It can be helpful to pinpoint a specific architectural style that appeals to you when discussing design with your builder. To do this, you can look through architectural magazines, go to open houses, or even browse online “Open Houses” on platforms like Zillow to find inspiration. Online quizzes can also help determine what showcases your style the best. And social media sites such as Instagram and Pinterest are also a great way to browse different designs and find inspiration or similar designs fast. Finding your style is an important indicator for your builder to help provide direction on the best structure for your build.

Tip #4: Focus on the Details

As this is a custom property, thinking about the smaller, more custom details is just as important. Reflect on your lifestyle to help pinpoint which rooms to focus on. For example, if you’re an excellent chef, you might want to focus more on the kitchen. Or, if cleaning is not your strong suit, maybe built-in tools such as an under-cabinet vacuum can make cleaning easier. Do you have an extensive book collection and need built-in storage? Also, think about what will bring you the most joy in your home. Will doing the dishes seem more manageable if you can look out a window above the sink?
