Homeowners renovate and remodel for a variety of reasons. A 2022 report from the National Association of Realtors found that Americans spent around $420 billion on remodeling in 2020 and calculated a “joy score” based on the reported happiness of homeowners. Dive into which home remodeling projects will bring you the most joy.
Upgrading a Laundry Room
Laundry room remodeling projects scored 9.5 out of 10 on the joy scale due to their practicality and features that improve ‘livability.’ This is the perfect project where you can add your personality and create a ‘luxe’ laundry room that serves multiple purposes. And adding practical features such as a hand shower or custom storage solutions can make chore-filled days more productive and give you a better sense of accomplishment. In fact, 84% of people surveyed said they had an increased desire to be at home since their project, and 68% said an upgraded laundry room increased their sense of enjoyment at home.
Remodeling a Basement
Renovating a basement can provide a high return on investment while also using an underutilized space and leaving your home feeling bigger. According to those surveyed, this was rated a 9.7 on the joy scale because of the increase in livability and a need for change. And of home remodeling projects, renovating a basement can provide the most customizability because of the myriad of remodeling structures and uses. For example, you can add more bedrooms or create a home office or gym, depending on your needs.
A kitchen remodel rated a 9.8 on the joy scale, adding livability and functionality. Additionally, the kitchen is such a frequently used space that people are able to be thankful and think about how their remodel perfectly aligns with their preferences more often. Kitchen renovations are also a great way to show off personal style.
While adding insulation to your house isn’t that glamorous of a project, it can improve energy efficiency and create significant savings on your heating and cooling costs. Adding insulation also helps to upgrade worn-out surfaces and was rated a 10 out of 10 on the joy score due to having a renewed desire to be at home since finishing the project, as well as the 100 percent return on investment from the project.
Adding a home office was another home remodeling project with a perfect score. Especially during the pandemic, having a space for organization and functionality was a necessary addition. Of those surveyed, 91% said they had a greater desire to be at home since completing the project, which was one of the highest percentages in the study.
